We hope you have been enjoying Week of the Young Child (WOYC)! While efforts in support of young children happen every day, it's nice to take a week to bring attention to the wonderful things happening in our county, state, and nation on behalf of babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. Make sure to check out our social media where we are highlighting daily themes around #WOYC2019.

In the spirit of WOYC, we are grateful to announce that First 5 has received two different grants to bolster home visiting and mental health support to families with young children through our Early Childhood Collaboratives. While funding for early childhood services still remains inadequate to meet growing needs, we appreciate the local, collective efforts to fund work that helps families provide a strong foundation for their youngest children.

In this issue, we also highlight local efforts around the 2020 Census. Our communities need an accurate count so services like WIC and Head Start are properly funded in our county; every child must be counted because every child counts!  We spotlight a recent event for participants in our mental health training series--be sure not to miss our newest video about the training series that debuted at the event. It honors training participants and those that have completed the endorsement process. Finally, we hope you will join us at our June 7, 2019 event celebrating 20 years of early childhood in Monterey County--please save the date!

Together with local stakeholders, Monterey County launched the 2020 Census on April 1, 2019. First 5 Monterey County staff and Commissioner and Supervisor Chris Lopez were in attendance. In the 2010 Census, children ages 0 to 5 were the most undercounted population. For every child who isn't counted, Monterey County will lose approximately $2,000 in federal funding each year, for 10 years! An accurate census count is critical to ensuring fair apportionment of congressional representation and tha... READ MORE
