Our thoughts are with all the families in Monterey County affected by the wildfires burning through our community. There are several hundred active fires throughout California, including three in Monterey County. First 5 Monterey County is here to support the health and safety of our community. We are thrilled that Lilia Wanless, a Parents as Teachers Educator for Door to Hope, was recognized as 2020 Parents as Teachers Parent Educator of the Year. The Parents as Teachers program provides educators to work with families to support parents as a child's first teacher. Lilia has been working for 26 years to support families and their children in their homes, fostering positive parent-child interactions through play. READ MORE

MY Museum and First 5 Monterey County have partnered to create bilingual Shelter & PLAY Family Fun Boxes for 2500 Monterey County families to engage with as they face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent evacuations due to wildfires. As Monterey County families socially distance from close friends and extended family, they can still keep playing, learning, and-especially-keep curiosity alive. READ MORE

We would like to thank the Monterey County Board of Supervisors for joining us in sending a joint letter of support to our local legislators to include funding for First 5 organizations across the state through a proposed Vape Tax. Across the state, First 5 funds have declined by 50% since being approved by the voters in 1998 through Proposition 10, a tax on tobacco. READ MORE

Relationships matter deeply. To continue supporting children, families and provider relationships during this challenging time, First 5 Monterey County is excited to announce that enrollment for our 9th year of the Infant Family and Early Childhood Mental Health (IFECMH) training has opened. Participants must live or work in Monterey County. Applications will be open until September 4. Space available until filled. READ MORE

Earlier this month, First 5 Monterey County joined other local partners to promote the 2020 Census and why families should count all children to ensure a better future for Monterey County before the deadline of September 30. Local families were encouraged to participate in virtual opportunities to engage and learn about the importance of the Census. READ MORE
